FAQ's
How can we determine what the swing of the door is called?
The door swing or handing of the door is different for door company's as against
Hardware Suppliers such as ourselves. Hardware Suppliers have the lock and latch
bevels to consider as well as the key cylinders so as to have the hardware ordered
properly to place them on the proper side of the door.
The rule to use is; Stand outside the room, be it the front entrance to the house, a
closet, a bedroom and determine where the hinges are. Are they on the right or the
left? Now, Does the door swing inside the room or swing out toward you. That's
all you have to know to determine the had or swing of the door.
1. RH Right Hand swinging door has the hinges on right side and the door swings
into the room.
2. RHR Right Hand Reverse swinging door has the hinges on the right side and the
door swings out towards you.
3. LH Left hand swinging door has the hinges on the left side and the door swings
into the room.
4. LHR Left Hand Reverse swinging door has the hinges on the left side and the
door swings out towards you.

For the most part, all mortise locks will need this information. While most manufacturers provide
mortise locks with field reversible latch's, not all do and providing the correct swings will prevent
you from having your contractor open the lock and change the latch bevel. Just good business to
buy it right the first time.
What are the different types of lock and latch sets available and there use?
1. Mortise Locks and Latches.
This is a lock box which is mortised into the edge of the door. The lock has the deadbolt and

Storeroom Locks, Privacy Locks, Passage Latch's and many other specific functions to address
special circumstances such as classroom doors.
The use of Mortise locks ranges from High End Residential with Decorative Trim to enhance the
decor of the home, to Commercial projects needing Industrial Strength Trim as well as Decorative
Trim that will stand up to the rigors of heavy traffic. Mortise Locks are usually Grade 1.
2. Tubular Locks and Latch's.
Most Decorative Residential hardware is Tubular in design. This consists of a tubular latch with
Decorative Trim attached with thru-bolts or surface mounted screws through the rosette. The
functions are Passage and Privacy with the security locking function being provided by a tubular
Deadbolt. The Deadbolt will be provided as an individual unit or part of an Entry Set Escutcheon
that has the Deadbolt built in above the levers or knobs.
3. Cylindrical Locks and Latch's.
Cylindrical Locks are available for residential and commercial. They are different from Tubular
latches in that they have a chassis that allows a cylinder to be placed into the spindle shank thus
creating a Key in Knob or Key in Lever lock. These locks and latch's come in Grades, 1,2 and 3.
4. Rim Locks.
These are some of the oldest designs of locks around. Available in Passage, Privacy and Entrance
Functions as well as Deadbolts which are the most popular today. These locks are surface
mounted with the cylinder hole being drilled through the door to accept a rim cylinder.
What are different ways to have locksets and deadbolts keyed?
Depending on your needs, locks and deadbolts can be ordered keyed in the following fashions;
1. Keyed Different. KD
All cylinders keyed individually different from each other.
2. Keyed Alike. KA
A group of cylinders are keyed the same and opened by the same key. Groups of cylinders can be
ordered keyed alike for the same project by designating the appropriate cylinders to be keyed KA1 or
KA2, Etc. depending how many groups needed. Each group of cylinders will have keys independent
from the other groups.

What does the term "Backset" mean?
Backset is the distance from the middle of the edge of the door to the center of the knob or lever handle where the
spindle goes from one knob or lever through the lock or latch to the other knob or lever on the opposite side of the
door. In general, Residential interior doors have a door prep requiring a 2 3/8" backset lock or latchset. 2 3/4" backsets
are found on exterior doors in residences and interior and exterior doors in commercial applications.
Other backsets are 1 3/4" up to 18". these are used on special applications requiring special hardware.
Please note that the above information is general and you should confirm what backset the door has been prepared for
from your door supplier or contractor. You need to order the correct backset for the door preparation or your doors
